THE GRAND DECEPTION OF KETCHUP.
The primary ingredient of tomato ketchup is not tomatoes but the very harmful High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) derived from genetically modified (GM) corn. By using ketchup, you are therefore also exposed to the full gamut of health problems associated with GMO and the pesticides and herbicides residues from such a crop.
The ketchup bottle certainly looks like it is filled to the brim with bright red tomato paste. The label lists tomato concentrate first (as the main ingredient). But we have been deceived.
Corn syrup has been listed twice, as if it were two ingredients, when in reality it is one and the combined amount surpasses that of tomato paste.
A study made by Osem, suggests that only 21% of one of the main producers of ketchup is tomato concentrate; the name Corn Ketchup is more appropriate than Tomato Ketchup. The heavily-processed tomato concentrate has hardly any nutritional value. The tomato concentrate also contains the unhealthy preservative citric acid, which is derived yet again from genetically-modified corn (not from citrus fruits).
The health hazards of High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) are many and serious. It is a huge contributor to obesity and is associated with an increased risk for type-2 diabetes as well as heart disease. This is because, unlike other sugars, it is metabolized in the liver where it is easily converted to fat. Furthermore, HFCS consumption is linked to dementia and liver damage.
Even the distilled vinegar used in ketchup comes from GM corn, and the large quantity of salt used is of the worst quality and contains a small amount of the corn-derived sugar Dextrose. This salt will cause an imbalance of minerals, increased blood pressure, and stiffening of the blood vessels that can lead to a heart attack and stroke.
The label does not specify what the “natural flavors” are made from but chances are the ingredients include more HFCS, GM beet sugar and other GMO derived ingredients. It will certainly contain the flavor enhancer Monosodium Glutamate (MSG).
In summary, most commercially-prepared condiments contain HFCS and MSG, and are loaded with primarily toxic trans fat GM oils. Food dyes (artificial colours) are often found in condiments and are another type of toxic additive that has been linked to multiple forms of cancer, as well as hyperactivity and behavioral problems in children.
